On this tour you will:

  • Kayak through St. Thomas' Mangrove Lagoon, an unspoiled region of mangrove forests.
  • Learn about the mangrove ecosystem and the ways in which it stimulates and supports wildlife—from the birds in the trees to the fish hiding in the roots.
  • Snorkel in clear waters, home to an abundance of wildlife including sting rays and colorful parrot fish.

This water-focused tour is rich in wildlife and goes at a gentle pace. It begins as you make your way in a kayak through the protected Inner Mangrove Lagoon and Marine Preserve. Paddle along with your guide and pass through many manglar islands, which are made up of red mangroves that thrive and flourish in the salt water. Many birds make their nest in the mangrove trees and if you look up, you’ll have a chance to see blue herons, night herons, egrets, yellow warblers, hummingbirds, or even spot the endangered brown pelican. Look down into the clear water and you can see juvenile fish hiding among the roots of the red mangrove trees where they school together to stay safe from potential predators.

As you paddle through shallower waters, the view from above gets even clearer and you will often see southern stingrays and spotted eagle rays gliding in the water below you. Occasionally they will even jump out of the water and up into the air, always a crowd pleaser. The kayak portion ends when you arrive at the southernmost tip of St. Thomas where a fringing, coral, and barrier reef made of shell rubble divides the crystal clear waters of the lagoon from the Caribbean Sea.

The snorkel portion of the tour begins there as you explore a coral-fringed mangrove nursery. This spot is perfect for beginners as the water is very clear and protected. Your guide will offer snorkeling instruction, point out the marine life, and interpret the diverse mangrove ecosystem so you understand the nuances and complexities of all that you see around you. There is also easy beach entry so you can unwind after your snorkel and soak up some sun at your leisure.
